Heliciculture system

Irrigation system for snail farming made with IrriPro

The plant has an area of approximately 1 hectare and is located a few kilometers from Turin (Piedmont). Starting from a detailed survey carried out on a CAD file, the elevations and slopes of the land where the system would be built were developed. The system is powered by the aqueduct at a pressure of 5.5 bar and the irrigation system is made up of a main pipeline, which runs along the road between the fences, with decreasing diameters in order to limit costs while providing an acceptable service . Finally, the lateral pipes run along the fences which support the dispensing devices, one meter above the ground.

The Project

Once the areas to be served with irrigation to administer 1 litre/day per m2 were known, mini sprinkler devices with 180° coverage and a nominal flow rate of 130 litres/hour at a pressure of 1.5 bar were chosen for irrigation.

The choice of mini sprinklers, instead of the more usual butterflies, was made to allow installation on the edge of the fences, for coverage with a pre-established angle and for easier management inside the fences.

The system is divided into several shifts through solenoid valves with programmers. The devices were positioned to obtain 100% coverage of the wetted area (maximum overlap) and achieve uniformity equal to or greater than 95% and efficiency greater than 73% for each shift.

Working chart of the system

In order to better evaluate the system for the different conditions to which it is subjected, the system’s operating curve has been developed (as pressure varies and for the various shifts)
